This page provides a quick reference to changes and additions to the site as well as local items of interest. A full list of events can be found in the Village Diary. Check the High Street for general information about Wargrave net and what it contains.

oWargrave Heritage Trust now has a section on the site. Click here to have a look.

oWeek commencing 25 August 2003:We seem to have attracted considerable attention recently! The number of unique visitors to the site rose from around 200 daily, to 840 on Tuesday, with 10,793 pages viewed that day!

Whilst a number of you decided to post follow-on messages making light of the situation and treating the media attention as the nonsense it was, some postings were downright offensive and served no purpose other than to demonstrate the (questionable) wit of the poster. These message were, and will continue to be, removed immediately.

I try to avoid censorship of the Noticeboard as I feel that people should have the right to express their views. However, I can't allow anything that might cause personal offence to individuals or groups, nor material that contains obscene content, unacceptable language and so on. I reserve the right to remove anything I feel is inappropriate. If you disagree, you are welcome to contact me at .

o

Broadband in Wargrave - we are finally there!

After a long campaign, we finally hit the trigger level of 300 pre-registrations in January and the local exchange (0118 940 ....) was enabled on 22 May 2003.

If your telephone number starts 0118 940, you should be able to order ADSL from one of the many ISPs offering the service. There may be a few of you, too far from the exchange to obtain sufficient line quality - I think the distance is 5km - but it should be available to most.

If you pre-registered and haven't heard from an ISP, give them a call. Some are better than others at following up the pre-registrations, so best to take the initiative!

You should be able to have ADSL enabled within a few days, although conversions from BT's Home- and Business-Highway offerings require an engineer to visit and lead times are currently 10-14 days.

If you don't have ADSL yet, give it a try - you'll be pleased you did!

There are various comments suggestions and requests for advice appearing on our Notice Board. If you have any views or suggestions, please post them!

o 24 April 2002 - Email viruses...

There seems to be yet another virus onslaught taking place at the moment. I received around 30 emails overnight, all with different subjects and from several different apparent senders, including services@wargrave.net!! The perpetrators of these viruses set up their email to appear to come from a different sender. Often, they will scan web sites and extract any email addresses, which is what has happened here. It isn't a malicious attempt to discredit the site (or does one of you know better?!), simply a way to catch victims off their guard as the message and sender look plausible.

Please be on you guard. This particular virus is WORM_KLEZ.G and details of this and many other viruses can be found at www.mcafee.com or www.smyantec.com. The best precaution is to ensure you are running ant anti-virus package on your computer and that you keep it up-to-date by downloading the latest files from the vendor's website.

oIf you are interested in what the village thinks about the proposals for a new community hall, have a look at the survey results on the Parish Council page

o Worried than there hasn't been much happenning on the site recently? Then contribute!! I'm open to all suggestions for new material, features and rnhancements. Most of all, I'm keen to build the involvement of other people. I have provided a server which can be set up to allow groups or individuals to maintain their own sub-sites, plus extensive email facilities.

My time is limited, so I can't spend as much time as I would like in developing the site. However, I already have a team of helpers in the village who are doing great things to keep their areas of interest up to date. I am happy to provide a dedicated server and whatever technical resources are needed to develop the site. Nothing is impossible on the Internet and I can provide support for WAP phones, secure servers and everything else that might be needed to develop our community site.

We have already received high acclaim and recognition worldwide and I would like to see it develop into a model for community sites everywhere. I don't have the time to do it alone, nor do the other team members. If you would like to help, have an ideas for new areas for the site, or suggestions for general improvement, please contact me at john@wargrave.net. The world's our oyster!ght it was about time I did something to enhance the site, especially as it gets harder to find those tucked-away bits of information now the site has grown quite large. So, (in case you haven't spotted it already), there is now a search facility available from the links at the bottom of pages.
Enjoy!

and past news, still of interest...

o Rumour has it Wargrave Library has been offering Internet access since upgrading its facilities on October 20, 1999. Now there's even more reason to support this valuable local facility...

o All change for the Wargrave Adventurers' web site! Now their newsletters, details of their activities and the photographic evidence can be found on the WAGS section of this site!

o Wargrave Youth Club now have a web site. Check it out at http://www.shr.co.uk/wyc.html

o Ever wished you could ring the bells at St Mary's Church? Now you could have the opportunity. The bellringers are looking for new recruits. Check this message from Dave Sullivan.

o Expecting visitors? Now you can provide them with a location map to assist in finding you. By simply clicking on your location on the Map of Wargrave, the page is redisplayed with a flashing red marker highlighting your location. Send the URL it generates (the address at the top of the browser window) to your visitor and they can view the map as desired.

Sorry, this initial version only works with Internet Explorer 3 and above, or Netscape 4 and later. Also the browsers seem unable to print it correctly. Version 2 of the map (coming soon) should resolve these problems! Meanwhile, if a printed copy is required, print the initial page, rather than the one with the marker. This is built in a slightly different way and should print okay with all browser/printer combinations. Then draw the dot manually after displaying the generated page (yeah, I know, back to pencil and paper!)

As soon as time permits, new software is being installed and the whole process will be much neater. Meanwhile, please email any feedback, comments, problems, etc., to map@wargrave.net. All improvements will be incorporated in the next version.

o They're a flashy lot that Theatre Workshop crowd... Not content with a swish new web site, they've got more fancy graphics and animations than you can shake a stick at! It's not to be missed - take a look at http://www.wargravetheatre.free-online.co.uk.

o One of the problems in organising events around the Village is ensuring they don't clash with other activities. To assist scheduling, Wargrave News maintain a diary which is held at Simmons and Lawrence in the High Street. Add your entry there and others will be made aware of any potential clashes.

If you submit events to us on-line, via our Diary page, we can update the Wargrave News diary as well as our pages if you wish. That'll save you a walk (or 10p in the car park)!!

o We have received several requests recently to include some photos of the village on the site. This particulary appeals to former residents now living in distant climes and feeling a little homesick!

The first collections of photos are displayed on our Photo Gallery pages (with thanks to Richard Lloyd and Lis Butler) and promises of more to come soon.

If anyone has any photos of the village they would like to see displayed on the site, please get in contact! Digital images in any PC-compatible format or colour photos (to be handle with care and returned promptly) would be gratefully received. Photos of the High Street especially welcome!

Please email photos@wargrave.net if you would like to contribute to the photo gallery. Photographers will be acknowledged on the page, of course (unless you would prefer to remain anonymous)!

o Wargrave continues to stakes its claim on the Internet! Wargrave Pre-School now have their own site. If you have young children, find out what's on offer at http://www.users.globalnet.co.uk/~wyattd/preschl/

o The Second Book of WargraveSecond Book of Wargrave was published on September 25th 1998 with a launch event at Woodclyffe Hall. Full details are available via the link above.

o If you enjoyed the "From Treble... To Bass" concerts, or if you missed them, but would like to hear the music, you may be interested in their CD/cassette. The web page includes RealAudio sound samples as well as full details of the CD/cassette. Have a listen! All proceeds to PRO Autism, a worthy local charity.

o With thanks to Peter Delaney and Richard Lloyd, we now have the updated bus timetables for the Parish of Wargrave.

o The Wargrave Local History Society have established a Web presence, including a Potted History of the Village courtesy of Peter Delaney. To find out more about the Society and the latest news regarding the Second Book of Wargrave, take a look at their pages.

o The initial version of the Wargrave and Shiplake Regatta site is now online. There's plenty of work to be done and content to be added, but these first few pages provide a flavour of what's to come...

o We are delighted to announce yet another area of Wargrave net! If you have lost a pet, or noticed a stray, visit the Petsearch site. You can register the missing animal or check to see if you recognise one that's been found!

o There are more link sneaking onto the Station page! For example, you can now access street maps of London and area maps for the rest of the UK. There are some more planned very soon.

o Can't remember what to leave out with the dustbins? Kerbside collection for week commencing Monday 28th July: papers, magazines and cardboard.

o Don't forget to investigate the Village Noticeboard. Here is a place where you can pose questions, air views, seek information, advertise items for exchange or private sale (sorry, no commercial advertising allowed). Use it for almost anything you like (as long as it's legal!). Most of all, enjoy it!

o To find more information about the pages on Wargrave.net, or to find some of those that are tucked away in dark corners, take a look at the "High Street" page.
