The 2005 Village Festival
|
As part of the Wargrave Village Festival, the Wargrave Local History Society conducted ‘Historic Village Walks’. Starting from the lych gate to St Mary’s church, about 65 people were able to hear about some of Wargrave’s history, looking at the places and hearing of the people and events that have shaped our village over the past 900 years or more. The walk included the church and churchyard, and then across historic Mill Green to Church Street and the High Street, where the changes in the types of shops available was perhaps the most notable feature. After the Tuesday walk, some of the walkers partook of a very appetising and enjoyable fish and chip supper at the White Hart. The Wargrave Local History Society has published a booklet - “Historic Wargrave Walks” - that contains 4 walks around parts of the village, including all the features mentioned on the village festival walks. The booklet is available at £2.50 from either of the newsagent’s shops in Wargrave. For those who would like to know more about the village history, The Book of Wargrave at £10, and The Second Book of Wargrave, at £16, are also available from village newsagents and Sheeplands Farmshop. At the Festival Procession and Fete the Society deployed its mobile exhibition display (in the form of Peter Delaney's 1963 Royal Blue Coach) showing a number of newly acquired photographs and copies of recently found documents. (see pictures below) Visitors were invited to add the names of village school pupils from the 1930s - 1970s. Maybe YOU have pictures, memories or other information about the village in the past. We are always interested to borrow to copy, or provide a permanent home for, any Wargrave related items like this, so the history is recorded for the future. Please let us know if you have anything like this to offer. All are welcome to our meetings, which normally begin at 8 pm in the Hannen Room, Mill Green, Wargrave, although the September meeting will be in St Mary’s Church. |
On the afternoon of Tuesday, July 12th, the Society will visit the Milestones Museum at Basingstoke. Anyone interested in joining the group is asked to contact the Society Secretary, Peter Delaney, as below. The next meeting will be on Tuesday September 13th, when John Dearing will talk about Hymn Writers Connected with Berkshire, whilst on Tuesday October 11th, Margaret Houlbrooke talks on Decades of Discipline - about life in the workhouse.
Our meetings (normally) begin at 8 p.m. in
the Hannen Room, Wargrave, and all interested are welcome.. Please contact me,
Peter Delaney . on 0118 940 3121 for more information about the
Society.
